You will be
able to learn to use top of the line protocol analyzers and software. You
will be able to "sniff" just about any protocol you want. You can even
conduct BERT tests on T-1 lines to learn how to troubleshoot Telco issues.
Agilent Advisor
Agilent Advisor Stand-alone J2300E
The Agilent Advisor is a fully functional standalone
Agilent Advisor LAN/WAN protocol analyzer model J2300E with Fast Ethernet,
Token-Ring, T-1 bantam, DDS, ISDN, V.35, RS232, and RS449 interfaces. You
can access this protocol analyzer as if you were in front of it by using VNC
either from your computer over the VPN or from the WIN2KSRV server. You can
run traces on WAN and LAN segments separately or simultaneously to follow
your packets from LAN to WAN media, generate traffic and monitor/analyze
VOIP calls. The stand alone Advisor is connected to several LAN and WAN
segments in the lab network so you can trace traffic on both WAN and LAN
segments simultaneously.
Refer to the Lab Diagram or the Lab Manual for more
details about where the stand alone unit is connected.
Agilent Advisor on the Windows Server provides the same features in software
for the Gigabit interfaces as the stand alone unit mentioned above but
without the WAN interfaces. Below are some screen shots of the Advisor in
action in the lab.

Packetyzer and Ethereal
Packetyzer and Ethereal are very good shareware real time display
protocol analyzers available on the lab servers. You can use these analyzers
also for any of the wired connections to the lab switch. To find out more
about Packetyzer or Ethereal refer to the their sites for
more details.

You can use Packetyzer with the WSP100/Neutrino or the
Network Chemistry RF Protect IDS(available in the lab)
receiver to trace 802.11a/b/g packets so you can learn about these protocols.
The WSP100/Neutrino and RF Protect IDS units are wireless packet sniffers.
They will
receive all 802.11 packets within range and send them to a PC over your
Ethernet network. No special hardware is required in the PC and any Ethernet
network can be used. RF Protect IDS software is available on a lab server
and is used to configure and control multiple sensors.
For more information about the RF Protect wireless
IDS go to their site directly for more details

LinkFerret
LinkFerret is also a very good commercial wire line and
wireless real time based protocol analyze available on the lab servers.
For more information about LinkFerret please go directly to their website for details.
